Forward Pixel Design

Collaborative design of the Inner Tracker Detector for the CMS Experiment at CERN. I took a collaborative approach with a heavy inclination with full life cycle of the systems including integration all the way to end of product life. This work included close colaborations with multiple teams nationally and internationally including electronics, manufacturing, integration, software, thermal, and fiber optics.

US CMS LUCASZ Cooling Plant

For the thermal verification test upon integration of the inner tracker detector to the CMS experiment I worked to replicate the LUCASZ cooling plant from CERN. This was done with my supervision of student and technitian support to lower cost due to budget constraints. This also allowd key personel to focus on other projects within the laboratory. Furthermore, this instroduced a new technology to the US and I led the trainings in thermals sciences, controls, integration, and project management to Conell University students and staff in order to acomplish the completion of the plant.

Telescope Design and Analysis

A small side project to help Astrophysist make a decision on materials and geometry neeeded for a telescope design used to look into the stars in our universe. This required modeling the opening for the mirrors and sizing o-rings needed to maintain a rough vacuum environemnt for the telescope. Futhermore, I verified similar design from a partner US team during this projects life.

Cherenkov Radiation Beam Size Experiments

For this project my main contribution was to aid and support during testing of novel idea to calculate the beam size of an accelerator using the Cherenkov radiation caused by the beam when it encountered as precision made prism designed by CERN physists and engineers. One notable moment I remember was a failure of their camera equipment, the solution was a overlooked comon problem and that is the US to Europe electrical differences. I worked with our CERN collegues to use power supply to be able to power the camera needed to collect the data in the limited beam time they were alloted. This was a very succesfull experiment that led to publications at conferences and as well as in a journal.

Testing for Integration Tracker Phase 1

After comissioning the LUCASZ cooling plant at CERN. I volunteered to aid in the final thermal verification of the previous inner tracker detector before its integration to the CMS experiment. From aiding as a laboratory technician I was able to observe and learn about different processes in the project and hurdles faced with final system verification before final integration. This experience was essential in making sure we did not repeat mistakes in the next design and system integration procedures. I worked with engineers and scientist from Fermilab National Lab in the USA on the Forward Pixel Detector for phase 1, and Engineers from PSI working on the Barrel Detector for phase 1. This experience allowed me to start collaboration discussions with various teams which led to more efficient designs for the next detector as well as creating the first bonds with future team members.

Comissioning LUCASZ Cooling Plant for CERN

In order to provide the cooling plant needed at Cornell to do thermal verification. I proposed the idea to duplicate an system to be used for such verifactions at CERN. The LUCASZ machine was not complete, my proposal was to volunteer to comission their machine in exchange for all drawings, controls, and software so that we could in the USA duplicate and introduce such technology. Furthermore, the comissioning required a tighter timeline than planned to allow the Phase 1 detectors to be integrated into the CMS experiment. As I worked to get the machine running and tested it with dummy heaters, I trained a CERN technician on the machine use and design the tests to mimic those expected to be seen by the detectors to come. The system comissioning was a success and the detectors were able to be tested on time and keep within the schedule for the LHC.

Delving into Civil Engineering with Concrete Slabs

The CLEO detector was dismantled at Cornell. The ramining space was to be updated for new equipment. This meant redesigning the open basement like hole left in the building to be used for new equipment. I worked using ACI 318 standard to design with another engineer the concrete slabs to cover the hole left by the particle collider. This new space housed klystron radio frequency equipment to be used for the accelerator. In this design, I had to consider not only national standards but also Cornell facility specifications, crane limits and shipping limits to properly size the concrete slabs and columns to be installed.

Mezzanine design for Klystron Equipment

This design required mechanical loading and modal analysis of a metal mezaanine design I made in order to house the acceleartors radio frequency klystrons. This allowed for more efficient use of the limited space in the laboratory. For this design I also made sure we had proper professional engineering signatures needed for quality assurance needed to house such specialized equipment. I made sure to take into account safety aspects for staff, including railings and proper stair that met OSHA and Environemntal Health Standards at Cornell.

Information Technology Manager

As IT manager I was responsible for all IT related items . Company growth and work on ITAR related projects led to a need to overhaul, strenghten and expand the security of our IT network. Some of these items included new Network CAD software to increase engineering productivity while keeping costs low, implementing new wireless access point across 5 different buildings within the CTS campus, create full inventory and purchase of new IT equipement, migrarting our email to locally managed server to higten security, mainated the company website, FTP and file server implementation for data sharing. I implement new company wide data backup system, created and implementing shipping and reciving database, update of companywide operating system across all machines including upgrade to all microsoft software, and being the main IT support on both software and hardware for all personel and visitors to the company. This was done parallel with my engineering responsabilities as a Research Engineer.
